Nazmi tipped for Spain stint - Soccer - New Straits Times

Nazmi angered officials when he quit Portuguese side Beira-Mar to join PKNS on a three-year contract in March but the 18-year-old may abandon them for a trial with a Segunda Division (Division Two) club in Spain.

A member of the 2011 Sea Games winning squad, Nazmi could attend trials sometime this month or next month in Spain and if the Selangor-born decides to go then PKNS will have to do without his services for the Malaysia Cup, which starts after Hari Raya.

It is also learnt that Nazmi may want to fulfil his obligations with PKNS in the Malaysia Cup before trying his luck with the Spanish club during the January transfer window.

Nazmi's agent Marco Guimaraes has made arrangements with the club and is awaiting confirmation.

"Nazmi has a clause in his contract with PKNS which allows him to leave them, of course with conditions, anytime if an opportunity arises outside the M-League," said a reliable source yesterday.

He first grabbed attention when representing Young Tigers 'A' in the S-League and later in the Olympic Qualifiers.

Nazmi signed a three-year contact with Beira-Mar last August but hardly saw any action in the Portuguese Under-19 league as he struggled to make the first team due to his small physique.

He has, however, become a confident player with PKNS despite the club failing to achieve their top-five target in the Super League by finishing eighth.

PKNS coach Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said his club need Nazmi to spur them in the Malaysia Cup.

"We have failed to meet our league target but I am confident we can achieve our quarter-final target in the Malaysia Cup.

"We will not beef-up our squad for the competition as there are not many quality locals. It is important I have all my players available for the challenge," said Abdul Rahman after the 5-4 defeat to Pahang at Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.

Many felt that Nazmi, after quitting Beira-Mar in February, would never again be considered for international duty but the midfielder, who has been making waves with PKNS, was called up by national coach K. Rajagobal for a recent playing-cum-training stint in Australia.

Nazmi has also been included in Rajagobal's squad for friendly matches against English Premier League side Chelsea (July 21) and former Champions League winners Barcelona (Aug 10).
